deliverables
Some of the achievements of the
KYB Project to date are as follows:
- The Lessons Learned for the Project Phase I as been documented
to help in the execution of the subsequent phases as well as
being useful to other similar projects elsewhere. This was conducted in early July 2008
- Pilot Interventions are still ongoing and it
is hoped that the outcomes will help in their up-scaling throughout
the basin by the Federal and the State Governments. By May 2007, the
intervention for the removal of weeds at one the outlets of Tiga Dam
and the servicing of the valves to restore Tiga River flow has successfully
been accomplished
- A Water Charter for the KYB had been developed. It was embarked upon
as a result of the felt need to overcome the challenges the Federal
and the State Governments face in managing the land and water resources
of the basin in an integrated and sustainable manner. The Charter is
ready to be signed by the Parties (i.e. the KYB States and the Federal
Government)
- A Catchment Management Plan (CMP) has been produced
for the basin. The CMP was adopted by stakeholders in May 2006 and subsequently
approved by the Executive Governors of the KYB States at a Summit held
at Damaturu in June 2006
- The CMP with its associated studied reports and materials from other
partner projects contributed to the decision of the KYB States Governors
to establish a Trust Fund, which take-off amount was matched one-on-one
by the Federal Government, to implement the strategic actions in the
CMP and other activities to be identified in the future that are in
line with IWRM principles. The Board of Trustees of the Trust Fund was
inaugurated at Abuja on the 15th May 2007
- A comprehensive Water Audit exercise that also considered future water
management options has been performed and the results were subjected
to stakeholders' scrutiny in May 2006
- A Decision Support System (DSS) tool with its manual has been developed
to aid decision-makers on water allocation, equity in sharing, among
others. This model/tool has been made flexible for regular updates
- Socio-Economic and Environmental Studies for the basin was successfully
carried out and the final report was ready by April 2006
- A pre-water audit study which is basically taking
stock of the available data, information and past studies for the basin
and identifying the knowledge gaps, if any, that exist. This study was
successfully conducted and completed by November 2005
